Some Phantom stories deliver action and jungle adventure; others dig deeper into human nature. The Dictator, first published in the Swedish Fantomen in 1981, is firmly in the latter camp—a sharp political thriller wrapped in classic Phantom storytelling. Written by Donne Avenell and illustrated by Knut Westad, it explores the uneasy relationship between power, responsibility, and the way authority can be twisted when something goes wrong at the centre of leadership. Rather than pitting the Phantom against a straightforward villain, the story builds its tension around uncertainty and mistrust, making the danger feel far closer to home.
