In The Totem of Evil, Spanish writer and artist Joan Boix delivers a fast-moving jungle adventure that blends mystery, deception and classic Phantom action. First published in Sweden in Fantomen 5/2022, the story opens with an unsettling discovery near the Skull Cave: a sinister totem pole erected overnight in the jungle. Its presence immediately raises alarm among the Bandar and Guran, and before long, it becomes clear that the object is far more than a simple, decorative symbol! Boix builds upon that evolving Singh narrative, presenting Sandal not simply as a pirate leader but as a complex adversary whose motivations remain entangled with the Phantom himself. In our previous issue no 2020 we began “Simulacra”, by Australian writer Julie Ditrich supported by the wonderful artwork of Wendell Cavalcanti. Wendell Cavalcanti complements this tone with dramatic, kinetic pages that emphasise both the physical hazards of the environment and the mounting sense of dread. His depiction of the dense rainforest and sudden bursts of action create a feeling of constant tension, while the visual storytelling hints that unseen forces may be guiding events. A story that delivers a gripping and delightfully Aussie-flavoured Daintree Rainforest adventure.
