“Carnival in Rio” is a full-length Fantomen story which was published by Semic Press in 1979. The story was written by Norman Worker, a British writer who wrote 128 Phantom stories for Team Fantomen, initially under the pseudonym John Bull. The artist whose work features in this story was the Norwegian artist Knut Westad, who began to paint covers for the Norwegian Fantomet comic book in the 1970s. Encouraged by Lee Falk, whom he met during Falk’s visit to Norway, Westad tried out for Team Fantomen. In 1979, he drew his first Phantom story. Westad continued to draw Phantom stories until 1986, after which his Phantom work was largely covers and illustrations for Fantomet. “Carnival in Rio” would have been the first story assigned to him by Fantomen.
