Nat Turner’s Spirit, written by Claes Reimerthi with art by Alex Saviuk Part 1 and Kari Leppanen Part 2, is a multi part series that shines a light on the dark days of slavery in America’s Southern States. Anyone who dared speak out against slavery in the south was jeopardizing their future, such was the mood of the day. John Brown, leader of the anti slavery movement, was hung for treason. Wealth and power were behind it all. Much of this wealth and power rested in the hands of plantation owners and merchant traders who had become accustomed to the easy profits which were possible through the use of slave labour and the market for human trafficking.

Our story starts in a Boston court room in 1860 where a case is being heard to decide if an escaped slave who has made a life for himself as a free man should be sent back to the South and to a life of slavery. Jesaiah Burns has a wife and family but even this is not enough to stay the hand of a Boston court judge. He is sent back into slavery. Mr Walker is a supporter of the anti slave movement and has been contributing money to help run away slaves find their way to the north! He is on-board a lavish and luxurious paddle streamer making its way down the Mississippi on route from Louisville to New Orleans when he sees the prosecutor from the court case in unusual and inappropriate company.
The plot thickens.....
