This was a Sunday newspaper strip and it is our first publication of the story in its entirety. I found it particularly rewarding to have Kit and Heloise on an adventure with their father as they set out to Iceland to set straight a previously unresolved injustice. There is a charming sense of family warmth in the relationship between the three as they fly to Iceland to search for treasure and truth.

The second of our new stories John X is another by Tony DePaul and on this occasion art was drawn by Paul Ryan. This was a daily newspaper strip that ran for much longer than most from 25.08.2014- 09.05.2015. It comes together very well as a completed story. The Phantom is grievously injured early on and we find ourselves taken on the ride as he teeters close to death and then struggles with rehabilitation and the loss of identity caused by amnesia. Devil the faithful mountain wolf as ever is by his side and the family never give up.

His true heroic nature is not diminished or suppressed by memory loss! Even time spent with the jungle patrol can’t seem to jog that past free in his mind. Will he fully recover and ever be The Phantom again? What will it take to jolt him back to full recovery? Yes you heard correctly! We will be taking a booth at Sydney’s Supanova Convention over the weekend of 18 - 19 June. This represents the first time that Frew has attended a convention as an exhibitor since 1996!

To commemorate the event, we are printing the first Phantom story to be set on Australian soil. To add some extra interest to this publication, it features the work of not one but six different cover artists. Trust me, this is no small or insignificant task! Getting one cover artist to complete their work and deliver to a deadline is vexing enough, but attempting to get six at once is akin to droving a litter of cats from Alice Springs to Sydney and encountering a mouse plague on route. Tomorrow, I’m told, it will all be here, and if you are reading this then it must have arrived. So we wait with fingers crossed in hope and anticipation. This comic book is due at the printer tomorrow, so leave the mice alone! You’re cutting it too fine, you crazy cats! All jests at artists expense aside, there will be two different covers for this publication; the main general newsagency distribution cover for both Australian and New Zealand distribution will feature a cover by the renowned Australian comic artist Gary Chaloner.

We will be producing a “jam cover” especially for the Supanova booth. From this “saturation” Birgitte decided to depict the story of the 14th Phantom because of its potential to explore contemporary themes of freedom, paternity and fantasy.

When looking at the painting from left to right we have on the left hand a tribal group with the characters dancing and laughing with joy – they and their children have been forever set free from slavery. All the costumes, headgear, weapons and ornamentation are authentic down to the beads and feathers.

This portrait is a glorification and celebration of freedom, parenthood and childhood.

The orbit of skulls reflects what happens when The Phantom strikes; as Birgitte says, “every time he punches, skulls fly every which way.” These skulls combined with the moon form a halo around The Phantom giving him the aura of immortality (an intrinsic element of the mythology as bestowed upon him by his creator Lee Falk).

This portrait of the main character is based on a study of the story of the origin of the Phantom as written by Lee Falk and beautifully rendered by Sy Barry. The statue in this episode is identical to this pose. The concept comes full circle – the Bandar natives who originally rescued the first Phantom were freed by him when he took on the persona of the god of their masters. Now, again some 13 generations on, history repeats itself.

Freedom is symbolized throughout the painting by broken chains; on the wrists and necks of the natives, in the fire and finally in the act of breaking them above the Phantoms head. The light of the moon over the tree tops in the valley reinforces the “explosion” of the chains snapping.

The fire itself becomes a metaphor for a crucible – a testing of “mettle” of the people whilst the weapons of enslavement and aggression are purified by the heat. Thus the smoke of slavery is transformed into the water of freedom flowing from the stream of life.

Another native on the right hand side, again in full and an authentic costume, is driving out the last two slave traders. These now usurped “masters” both wear the indelible mark of The Phantom. Obviously they have faced his wrath. The slavers with the symbol of water behind them have themselves undergone a type of rebirth albeit not of their own choosing.

The heavens as well are charged with bolts of lightning.

The whole painting in all its detail and authenticity retells the classic story in a realistic yet fabulous genre. Truly a work of art capturing real people, real emotions within the drama of creativity. This creative element is evoked firstly by Birgitte the artist (in the act of creating the painting herself), and then secondly recreated by the characters within the artwork (in their traditional means of self expression namely song, dance and the wearing of colourful costumes). These aspects all combine to tell the tale of the 14th Phantom who ended the slave trade of the Eastern Dark as recorded by the original author Lee Falk.

All prints have so far been printed by Veritage Press at Lisarow with colour separation by Reprographics.”

Size 1093 x 664 mm

$125 incl. postage (Australia only)
For international orders, please contact us on +61 (0)2 9261 8122.

The 5th Phantom by Barry Dean

Here’s Barry Dean’s introduction and explanation for his print:

“As a member of the Sydney Maritime Museum, I have a love of timber boats – perhaps that is why I was tempted to depict the fifth Phantom fighting pirates on the high seas. In fact, Dietmar is responsible for bringing Sy and his wife Simmy over to Australia to help launch the print series at OZCON7 in Sydney. Apparently, Sy and Simmy were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response they received from Phantom Phans wherever they went. Dietmar is hoping to bring them to Australia again in a few years time.

The third print of the series depicts the 6th Phantom in his 17th century costume with muscats in his holsters, emerging from the Skull Cave, and brandishing a sabre in the air. The 6th Phantom is remembered as the founder of The Jungle Patrol, and this aspect of history is commemorated by the painting. He described 400 prints here, 400 prints there, 21 paintings here plus 4 paintings there … 25 different artists … I thought this was a prank! But as he continued, I actually began to believe him and then to like the idea … thinking maybe the little green men will be calling on me soon! However, it didn’t take long for me to realize the truly rational and wonderful concept it was. I soon accepted the commission to paint one of The Phantoms. Now to decide which one … well, having drawn The Phantom for 33 years, one Phantom had to remain my favourite above the rest … the 6th Phantom!!! The reason for this choice is because this story offered me the toughest challenges … creating these four pirates that The Phantom challenges individually to duels. Big Bart, a duel with axes; Salla with blades; Cruncher [sic] with bare fists; and finally Redbeard with sword and dagger, defeating them all and offering them their lives. In return they had to serve him as their lieutenants in the newly formed Jungle Patrol. At the same time he was successful in rescuing Queen Natala of Navarre … Redbeard’s captive. Phantom falls in love with her and later in the story she proposes to him and with some encouragement from his lieutenants, he accepts. Working out the problems of illustrating the fight sequences between Phantom and his combatants was truly gratifying. It was with the feeling of nostalgia and excitement that I tackled this painting and enjoyed every brush stroke. Thanks, Dietmar, for giving me this opportunity, and Simmy and I want to thank you and Julia for your warm hospitality.”

Sy’s final oil painting is shown above, and to the right he is pictured with his work at OZCON7, 26/27 September 1998. A keen opera lover, Rosemary has focussed on the 15th Phantom who married an Italian opera singer in Rome. The 15th Phantom succeeded his father in ca.1831, and so he was probably present in Italy at the time Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) was composing his famous operas. Indeed, there is some suggestion that Bellini might have actually encountered the Ghost Who Walks and was inspired by him! One of his most important operas I Capuleti ed i Montecchi (1830), was based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Perhaps Bellini heard the tale of the 3rd Phantom who played Juliet on the opening night? The same opera speaks of “ … my son the valiant warrior … who unites his destiny to mine … ” — perhaps a hint of the father-to-son progression for the Oath of the Skull? And then there is Bellini’s next opera La sonnambula (1831) which translates as The Sleepwalker — perhaps a reference to the famous title of Ghost Who Walks? Coincidence or fact … ?

Rosemary has a brilliant gift of being able to successfully meld the most extraordinary colour combinations, and this painting is a perfect example. Bruce James, a long-time phan of The Phantom who also happens to be the art critic for the Sydney Morning Herald, recently wrote: “Valadon is producing increasingly charged, increasingly expert paintings on the theme of self and self-representation … if she chose, Valadon could whip up a rattling society portrait, a la Sargent, at the drop of an ostrich-feathered chapeau.”

Note: It is worth observing that a different historical interpretation is taken in Scandinavia, where the 15th Phantom is said to have married Juliet Adams, otherwise known as Captain Amazon. Ironically, the portrait shows The Phantom on the wings of a plane during World War Two, over the streets of New York being attacked by enemy planes. Early proposals actually featured World War One biplanes rather than the German Messerschmitt Bf109s that feature in the final painting. Given the events of September 11, Dietmar was in two minds as to whether to release the print or not. “Would people find it offensive? Am I being insensitive? He describes his inspiration for this Phantom portrait and the techniques he used:

The image came to me in a dream, believe it or not! I often get ideas like these from problems I sleep on. The image of The Phantom in a pitched dogfight over the towers of old New York came first, and after talking to Dietmar about the period that this scene could fit into it kind of fell into place. The design of the idea came a little harder, and actually went through several stages or versions until I arrived at a solution that I felt expressed the action and drama of the painting the best. I’ve used a classic renaissance method of oil painting much akin to watercolour, where you establish a mid colour tone and bring elements forward sculpturally with highlights. Therefore, the thickest amount of paint is on the brightest parts of the painting. After establishing a blocking in of the elements, I then begin a series of glazes of transparent oil colour, continually pushing back the painting into the darkest tones and then bringing them forward with highlights. I continue with this method, drying in between, which takes several days or longer, until the painting becomes chunky or three dimensional. I usually, apply between 20 to 50 glazes to get the effect I want, though not always over the entire surface of the painting.

The painting was in progress when the terrible events of September 11 unfolded. The visuals Frantz witnessed had a strong effect on him, as they did to all others who saw them. It was inevitable that his Phantom portrait would be influenced by these events.

On September 11, my sister rang me at 3am to turn on the news. Something in her voice sounded so urgent, but sleep prevented me from understanding what it was she was saying. I wandered into the darkened lounge room, carefully measuring my footsteps so that I didn’t collide with my still wet Phantom painting, sitting on an easel in the middle of the room. I fumbled for the light switch, found it, turned it on, then abruptly turned it off again when searing pain hit my eyes from the intense brightness overhead. I managed to grab the remote and pressed the ‘on’ button. The television came slowly to life, illuminating the room and I stood marvelling at the new colours playing over the surface of the painting. As my vision cleared and I was able to stare at the bright screen, what unfolded was a macabre scene from some apocalyptic nightmare. I thought of the end of the world, I thought of my children lying peacefully in their beds. The phone range again. This time I was awake when I heard my sister’s voice on the other end. ‘Yeah’ I said ‘I’m watching it now.’ For a long time I couldn’t say anything about what I was watching, I couldn’t express any words. The whole story shocked me into a kind of dream state. This derived from some seemingly inexplicable intersection of the age-old bellicose traditions of one of the most culturally remote areas of the world and twentieth-century comic book illustration, if not pop art—a phenomenon that art historian N. F. Karlins has referred to as pop tribal. The frequent text in English or in Tok Pisin on other examples—man ino save dai (man who cannot die) or man bilong pait (man of war)—only adds to the multicultural depth. Though these appear to be curiously syncretic objects to the Western eye, to the people of the Wahgi Valley they held deep meaning to the martial power of moral rectitude and the guidance of ancestral spirits.A new book published in February 2021 by art dealers Chris Boylan of Sydney, Australia, and Jessica Lindsay Phillips of Toronto, Canada, is an exhaustive study of this tradition.
