It flows from the pen of Claes Reimerthi accompanied by the wonderful and on occasions dark and foreboding artwork of Kari Leppanen. Our cover has been a collaboration between Jeremy McPherson and Glenn Ford.

It is enlightening to know a little about our title character Nat Turner. He is not a fictional character. He was born into slavery in 1800 on a Southampton County plantation. He was an intensely spiritual boy who always had visions and believed he had been chosen by God to emancipate the slaves in the South. He saw himself in a battle with the serpent. On 21st August he led a violent insurrection against the white plantation owners and slave traders. It struck fear into the hearts of the previously unchallenged white community. Leaving them glancing over their shoulders. Their lives of gentrification had experienced a shattered peace, bringing to the doorstep a sense of fear and disquiet.

Nat Turner was on the run for six weeks after the riots, but was eventually caught and later hanged. The art by Felmang and Eugenio Benny is as you might expect has great strength and movement. Romano Felmang often entrusted the inking of his drawings to a handful of other talented artists. The Swedish title was “Argan List” and as you can see from the small cover inset below it was just one of several stories to appear in a 100 page comic published by Fantomen in 1993. The literal translation is guile or deception but we decided to go with “Evil Schemes”, it sums up the plot and keeps us in line with Phantom Wiki! In this story is the first introduction to the Teneke tribe. The use of the potent mind altering Durru mushroom is to reappear in other Phantom stories. It’s essentially a tale of lust, power and the evil that this can generate in the wrong hands. This story introduces the ‘monkey mail’ delivery chimps for the first time!

Back in 1960 a native would ask the postal clerk “Mail for Mister Walker.” A native relay runner takes it at the jungle’s edge – relay after relay ends at ‘The Great Swamp’ where the last ‘mailman waits’ for the monkey mail! The natives also advise the Phantom by tom-tom of incoming mail, ‘Message comes to Deep Woods.’ This story introduces a number of monkey mail chimps. The first chimp is Egbert, the second is Fofo and the third is Bibi and it is Bibi that is shot by the smugglers!

Have a look at Diana’s second letter to the Phantom, it is a cablegram addressed to Mr Walker, PO Box 7, Bengali! Surely the address should have been Morristown Bengali! The previous time Morristown was mentioned was in the 1950 Sunday story ‘The Mysterious Passenger’ No.1094, the next time it was mentioned was in the Sy Barry 1962 daily story ‘The Epidemic No.1032 when Diana does address mail to Mr Walker PO Box 7 Morristown Bengali. In the period in between these two stories there was no Morristown, just Bengali, Port of Bengali, Bengali Bay or Bengali Town.

For the first time the Jungle Patrol try to arrest the Phantom, in his ‘Mr Walker’ attire, as a diamond thief and murderer. Phantom to patrol: “No witnesses, no evidence, no warrant. Look in your rule book” then he disarms them! Colonel Weeks says “Naturally – he didn’t let them see him. They almost arrested their own Commander. Commander – Mr Walker – Wonder who else he is!” “The Phantom is many men –“ Old Jungle Saying.

No. 180 contains two stories. The first is the first publication of the 1955 Sunday story ‘The Crescent Cult’ and the second is the first publication of the 1955 Sunday story ‘The Horned Star Demons.’ The artist for both stories is Wilson McCoy. ‘The Crescent Cult’ contains the only reference to the ‘Queen of Bengali.’ The Queen of Bengali is one of only a few women to sit upon the Skull Throne. This story can be read complete in issue No. 1234.

‘The Horned Star Demons’ is the first story to feature alien life forms! The aliens test the Phantom to see how easily they can vanquish him and then the rest of the world! Thankfully they chose the Phantom! This story was published complete in issue No. 1226.

No. 179 contains the second publication of part 2 of the 1949/50 daily story ‘The Thuggees’ with art by Wilson McCoy. This story was previously published in issues No. 86 and 87 back in 1955. This daily story is both censored and contains a mystery! Compare No. 179 with the complete daily version in No. 1234 and the Sunday version in No. 1496. In No. 179 the long-bladed knife held in the long arm of the thuggee idol has been censored and deleted! But this page also shows two panels of Diana roped to the sacrificial altar of the idol! If you go to pages 36 and 37 of No. 1234, which is the uncut daily version, Diana is not shown on the altar at all! What did the Phantom save her from? It didn’t make any sense. But No. 179 does show two panels of Diana on the altar! These two panels came from the Sunday version of the story found on page 48 of No. 1496!

Barry Stubbersfield

Phantom Historian

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"Raiders of the Great Kings' Tomb" - story by Giovanni Fiorentini and art by Felmang.
"Heart of Darkness Ch1 Ep7" - story by Claes Reimerthi and art by Joan Boix

Cover art by Romano Felmang & Mario Caria

Story :

This is a very special publication for us here at Frew. I have been hoping that we might be able to get hold of a story as historic and unique as this for some time now. So courtesy of Romano Felmang we are proud to be publishing “I Ladri Della Tomba Del Gran Re,” or for the first time in English “Raiders of the Great King’s Tomb.” Writers and Artists were not originally credited when stories were published in Italy but the writer was most probably Giovanni Fiorentini since he was the primary writer for Spada at the time. The story certainly has a confidence and strength about it that suggests an experienced hand on the pen. The stakes couldn’t be any higher than life and death! The Phantom and Diana work as a team to ensure that Diana’s friend Hamer Balton does not suffer an undeserved fate! Time, distance, climate and the greed of villainy works against them but this all serves to build the momentum and suspense.

Just feast your eyes on the gorgeous covers by not one but two Italian masters. The front cover was provided by Romano Felmang with the art for the story. This represents a world exclusive for Frew. I can’t resist saying a coup for the Frew Crew! Now there’s a tongue twister! Those of you who may be vacillating over the subscription to our Signature Series there will never be a better opportunity to have an original comic signed by Romano Felmang. The back cover on this was formerly adorning the front of the Spada publication which was by Mario Caria whose career produced hundreds of covers not just in Italy but in many other countries.

This was not Romano’s first story that was Kaniska which was never published in its original form. This art is the first he had published in Italy by Spada. He went on to have an international career published in Italy, France, Scandinavia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Australia and the United States. You can see in this art the very germination of that gift, still not in the full flower of his artistic maturity. It is simple and slightly naive in appearance. Clean and youthful but without the flourish of expansive and luscious detail that we see in his later work. At this stage in his art we can witness an uncluttered, sparse and raw talent. This represents the first time that Frew has attended a convention as an exhibitor since 1996!

To commemorate the event, we are printing the first Phantom story to be set on Australian soil. To add some extra interest to this publication, it features the work of not one but six different cover artists. Trust me, this is no small or insignificant task! Getting one cover artist to complete their work and deliver to a deadline is vexing enough, but attempting to get six at once is akin to droving a litter of cats from Alice Springs to Sydney and encountering a mouse plague on route. Tomorrow, I’m told, it will all be here, and if you are reading this then it must have arrived. So we wait with fingers crossed in hope and anticipation. According to the tenets of Vodoun, a dead person may be revived by a bokor or Voodoo sorcerer. They remain under the control of the bokor and have no will of their own. Over the years, there have been many different opinions and research studies done into the existence of zombies. None have been conclusive. There are pharmacological theories that claim a living person can be turned into a zombie if two special powders enter the bloodstream. One of these toxins is the same found in the Japanese pufferfish; it can leave a person in a state of near death for several days. The second is a dissociative drug, like datura, which can leave a person in a zombie-like state with no will of their own. Others have suggested that the victim’s own belief system may lead to compliance with the attacker’s will, causing quasi-hysterical reactions, amnesia, catatonia, or other psychological disorders often misinterpreted as a return from the dead.
Whether it be drug-induced or mental health related, the notion of zombies has brought fear and fascination in pop culture over a lengthy passage of time. The zombie in this story is huge, scary, and strong. I might even venture so far as to say that the Ghost Who Walks might have ended up in deeper trouble without a little help from the dark arts.

Collectible!

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"Nat Turner’s Spirit Part 6" - story by Claes Reimerthi and art by Kari Leppanen.

Heart of Darkness Chapter 2 part 3

Cover art by Shane Foley. Signed by Artist

Story : Nat Turner’s Spirit Part 6, The King of Louisiana brings a close to the story by Claes Reimerthi with the intensely brooding art by Kari Leppanen. The conspirators stop at nothing to maintain their power and wealth, which was utterly dependent on the continuation of the barbaric slave trade. Only the Phantom and a force of nature will be strong enough to stand in the path of such determined evil. Continued over six gripping episodes, this story has taken us from the liberality of the North to the slave plantations of the South. This is a tremendously exciting new chapter in a long running epic struggle between the Phantom and Dogai Singh. It would be useful if you want to refresh your memory a little or for those that came in late to this story to read Issue No 1605 and also Issue No 1614. You will read about a saucy and tantalizing little moment of trickery that leads to the Phantom’s seduction and possible impregnation of his arch enemy’s daughter, President Sandal Singh.
She is clearly just as clever and conniving as the rest of her family, only her pursuit of power and wealth has gone down a more legitimate path. The path of a politician. Some may rightly say that there is little difference between the vocation of a politician and a pirate. Her father Dogai Singh certainly sees it that way and wants nothing more than to see his daughter and his grandchild return to the family business. So strong is that desire that he will stop at nothing to damage her political career and once again have complete control and influence over the family’s succession plan! Over many years of piracy he has accumulated numerous enemies, who are just waiting for the opportunity to seek their own measure of revenge! One such vengeful plotter has infiltrated the highest levels of trust and his day for what he sees as justice has finally arrived! It is of course called Rodiagate, which refers to a political illegality being exposed, in similar vein to the Watergate scandal in the U.S.
We find out just how strong and resilient Sandal Singh is as she is forced into a less than perfect birthing experience and battles for the safety and custody of her new born son. This story was previously published in two issues No. 86 and 87 back in 1955. ‘The Thuggees’ was discussed in the previous replica issue but this story is basically a love story in which the Phantom starts out for America to ask Diana to marry him! Lee Falk then thwarts this happy event by placing the thuggees in the Phantom’s way. When the Phantom disposes of them he has to run the gauntlet of Prince Tydore’s only child the Princess Tari who is madly in love with him. Now when the Phantom frees himself of Tari and is once more united with Diana, who comes swinging through the trees, well not quite swinging, ‘The Ape Idol of the Durugu!’ ‘The Thuggees’ can be read complete in No. 1234.
No. 177 contains the third publication of part 2 of the 1947 daily story ‘Romance and the Vesta Pirates’ with art by Wilson McCoy. This story was previously published in No.4 back in 1948 and 65A! in 1953. All publications of this story focused only on ‘The Vesta Pirates’ with the ‘Romance’ part of the story (part 1 and part 3) deleted until Jim Shepherd published the story complete for the first time in No. 925A! and more recently in No. 1606.
The official title given for this story is simply ‘Romance’ but this doesn’t seem quite enough to describe the story where most of the action takes place with the Phantom fighting the Vesta Pirates! In this story Mama says to Dave “You’re my only brother…” and further she says “I’ll never give my blessing – never – never” to the Phantom marrying Diana! The Palmer family address is given as ‘Talesend Road.’ Don’t forget that famous telegram supposedly sent from the Phantom to Diana saying ‘Going on cruise. Will not return’ and the scene where the Phantom brings Kerry back to see Diana to explain things to her with armed guards lining the walk. Dave’s speech to Mama is a classic “Maybe he was afraid to come back alone.”
No. 176 showcases the first publication of the 1937/38 daily story ‘Little Toma’ also known as ‘Little Tommy,’ with art by the great Ray Moore. ‘Little Toma’ is one of the earliest Phantom stories it is strange that it took so long to appear in a Frew comic. I’m guessing that it was overlooked for quite some time. Regarding the Phantom’s immortality, a remote jungle tribal witch-doctor says “We witch-doctors know that the Phantom line has passed down from father to son many times…” In ‘The Thuggees,’ mentioned above, the jungle chief says “Our people think he never dies – but we chiefs know better – That he is a mortal man.”
Reynold’s, Tommy’s father, was a missionary who lived on the ‘Upper Tylani River’ and it is around this time that the Phantom’s home moved from the ‘Island of Luntok,’ near Java, (last mentioned in ‘The Sky Band’ 1936/37) to an area that may be near India? Bad weather is attributed to the Phantom on board the ‘S.S.Bradley K’ and the superstitious crew blame him (the Phantom) calling him ‘a jinx – a jonah.’ On board the ship the Phantom and Tommy stay in Cabin 14 for the first time. One of the most famous fight scenes ever drawn by Ray Moore appears on 11 and 12 January 1938 when the Phantom fights Tai’s bodyguards. ‘Little Toma’ was published complete in No. 931A and in No. 1249.

Collectible!

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"Venus of the Jungle" - story and art by Angelo Todaro.

Cover art by Angelo Todaro.

Story : Welcome to the first issue of ‘The Phantom’s World’!
One of the first things we did, as the new Frew Crew, was look around for unpublished Phantom stories, from all over the world, which we could get hold of and reprint for the first time in English. (We gave you a taste with our recent Romano Felmang Issue - #1753). We found a wealth of material, ranging in quality from the sublime to the indigestible! Most readers are aware, I’m sure, of the vast number of Swedish stories that are yet to grace our pages and these will be turning up on an ongoing basis in the regular Frew comic. There are, however, many other Phantom stories that have been produced and published, under license, in many other countries, such as Brazil, Italy, Germany, Turkey and more.
Some of the newer, smaller, under-developed countries have produced some unlicensed ‘curiosities’, but you won’t be seeing any of those here. The stories we’ve found generally date back to the 60’s-80’s, when the Phantom was a world-wide newspaper phenomenon, and are accordingly much simpler in their style of story-telling - probably closer to the Lee Falk school of comic-strip writing - and quite far-removed from the modern, Egmont-style gritty, multi-part epics. You’ll be seeing some amazing artwork from Phan favourites, such as Romano Felmang, Germano Ferri, Angelo Todaro and Walmir Amaral de Oliviera. It won’t stop there, though - you will also see some newly commissioned stories from some of these international superstars. Romano Felmang is busy working on 2 brand new stories for us, and Angelo Todaro is writing and drawing something very special for us, as well.

This issue contains reprints of some of Angelo’s early work. ‘The Venus of the Jungle’ from Aventure Americaines #241 (1969 - pictured) and the back-up story ‘Like Lightning from the Sky’ from Les Heros de L’Aventure (1970 - also pictured) - both originally published by Fratelli Spada.

Also of note - Issue, #1764, our 80th Anniversary Special, is essentially a Phantom’s World sampler - 8 different stories, from 8 different countries, from over 8 different decades! Perhaps the scantily clad girls of the harem were judged a little too raunchy for the times and sensibility of the readership back in 1979, more likely it was overlooked in favour of a reprint of a Lee Falk original. It must have been difficult back then to choose a Swedish story over an American classic after all. It still is today, but in those days it would have been like listening to a cover band rather than the original. The Scandinavian output has been so prolific over many years and the quality of their stories and art has earned them a seat at the table as true disciples of Falk.
Every time I see one of these unpublished stories come through from Egmont it feels as though we have just opened a vault and unearthed a secret treasure. Llongo’s Amulet tells the tale of a sailor Toby Smith who had the most incredibly bad luck until one day he helps save a girl from a crocodile. The girl turns out to be the Llongo chief’s daughter. He is rewarded with a lucky amulet which reverses his fortunes and leads to him becoming the wealthy ruler of a mountain kingdom. It was written by Donne Avenell, and the art was produced by Jaime Vallve. Originally published by Semic Press back in 1978. The Phantom reads in a newspaper that the millionaire Jason Parnossos has discovered Cleopatra’s Tomb and along with it the mummified remains of the snake that killed her. He takes great interest in this article, since he already happens to have the remains of the snake that proved fatal to Cleopatra in his treasure room. The 9th Phantom had discovered her tomb back in 1720, so the Phantom’s suspicions were immediately aroused. He travels to Giza in Egypt to investigate Parnossos’ claims and the plot takes off from that point, as the Phantom must overcome numerous obstacles to eventually unearth the truth about the multi millionaire and his priceless collection.

Collectible!

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"Predator's Road" - story by Claes Reimerthi and art by Heiner Bade.

Cover art by Glenn Ford.

Story : In this plot we get to know the history of the central bad guy Captain Bababu. Certainly he was bullied as a boy, and lost his mother who was his sole parent at a very early age, but is that really justification for the extreme and violent nature that he has adopted as an adult? I suggest reading 174 (part 1) before reading 175 (part 2)! No. 174 and No. 175 contain the second publication of part 1 and part 2 of the 1943/44 daily story ‘The Governor and Suzie’ with art by Wilson McCoy. This story was previously published in three issues No. 79, 80 and 81 back in 1955. This story follows on from ‘The Phantom’s Engagement’, complete in issue No. 1154 and 1340, when Diana told the Phantom she was going to marry Byron. At the end of ‘The Phantom’s Engagement’ there is a caption leading into the next story, ‘Next Week: High Seas Highjacker’. Whether this is meant to be the story title for ‘The Governor and Suzie’ or just a lead in telling readers what was coming up is open to debate as Lee Falk did not title the actual story. The Phantom boards the S.S.Harvey. This is the fifth time the Phantom stays in cabin 14! On deck Suzie desperately tries to meet the mysterious ‘Mr Walker.’ Reminiscent of Trudy in ‘The Shark’s Nest.’ Suzie and the General talk about the Phantom,“…it was a native legend of a man who had lived for centuries – who was rough on all lawbreakers – but especially rough with pirates – a man, they said, ‘with the strength of ten tigers’...” A few panels further the caption reads ‘The Phantom moves behind them, as silently as a cat.’ Lee Falk had not yet invented old jungle sayings but you can see where they came from. Suzie offers to help the Phantom escape. Phantom: “Suzie, I’m in a tight spot – I’ve been in tight spots before – I’ve gotten out of them – But I’ve never lied my way out of them…” The Phantom had a similar offer of help from Sala in ‘The Singh Brotherhood’ just before he was led to the vat of boiling oil! (see pages 150 and 151 of No. 1128). The General to Suzie: “Remember, the only one who can help any of my employees to quit is the undertaker.” One of the most dramatic scenes in a Phantom story as the Governor shoots to kill the Phantom, Suzie runs between them and is shot. With Suzie gasping for life on the floor, the Phantom is filled with fury – he swings hard – and the Governor cheats the hangman after all. The saddest sequence Lee Falk ever wrote for a Phantom story, even more compelling than the fate of ‘Queen Asta of Trondelay.’ Commencing on 19 February 1944 Suzie’s request , once read, never forgotten, as she lies dying in a hospital bed. “You’re the first man I’ve ever really loved...yet I’ve never seen your face...will you...let me see...what you really...look like?” And the Phantom unmasks for Suzie on 22 February 1944! Suzie: “You look... As I imagined... You’d look.” This story was published complete by Jim Shepherd in Frew No. 1184 which has one of the finest covers you will ever see. The story was more recently published in issue No. 1623. No. 173 contains the very first publication of the new 1960 daily story ‘The Reporter’ with art by Wilson McCoy. Jungle Patrol territory stretches from the coast for a hundred miles into the jungle – and a thousand miles long, crossing six countries. ‘World’ magazine sends Maggy and Blake to do a story on the Jungle Patrol. Col. Weeks: “We get a thousand applications a week, out of them one or two may make it…” Col. Weeks: “This room is top secret. You broke in here. It is permitted in my orders to put you both against that wall and execute you by this firing squad. Now!” The well sign reads, ‘Well water condemned stay out Commander J.P.’ but at the end of the story the sign has changed to ‘Stay out well water condemned Commander J.P.’ Blake is the second person (after the master spy Heg) to discover the secret of the well and the identity of the Unknown Commander of the Jungle Patrol. So on the
occasion of their 15th birthdays the decisions need to be made. This is
an interesting story for two reasons. One, it is an another opportunity to
appreciate and savour the work of Paul Ryan. Secondly, as it may very
well signpost a new direction for the Phantom. Up until now it has been
unclear what was going to occur with the children. Feast your eyes on the gorgeous double page spread of Hero at full stretch, clearly revelling in a little light gallop through the jungle midst pouring rain, as he carries the Phantom on an urgent rescue mission. The story tells a tale of two very different paternal lineages. Fathers and sons pitted against one another over two generations. We get to see the mechanics of good and evil play out against one another set against a backdrop of variant family values. Sons often seek to follow their father and to gain that warm glow of approval for the effort. In some instances it is on the darker side of human existence and others, like the Phantom are well and truly in the light! My personal view is that it is all quite sweet and innocent really but I feel sure there may be some of you that view it differently. Please jump on your computers and let me know if you have an opinion one way or the other. Perhaps I should have asked Glenn to draw in some big girl pants or bikinis but I didn’t want to take away from the naive frolicking artistry in its original form. Who are we to be placing black censorship boxes all over a piece of Phantom history drawn by the likes of Felmang and Ferri? I suspect that it may have been this very question that has caused the delay in publication here in Australia. At it’s heart this story from the pen of Donne Avenell is essentially a fable in its structure. A fable being a short tale to impart a moral lesson, often with animals or inanimate objects as characters. This story displays similar characteristics to LLongo’s Amulet by the same author which we published last year.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0378/0521/products/1775-Front-cover-Signature_7129d697-74e2-40d7-9042-516f1730755b.jpg?v=1489705359
issue-1778-signature-series
Issue 1778 - Signature Series, 2017

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"The Callenge" - story by Tony dePaul and art by Paul Ryan.

Cover art by Jeremy Macpherson.

Story: The Challenge, is a daily story that appeared in newspapers starting 11 May, 2015 and ran until 12 September. This one was written by Tony DePaul with art by Paul Ryan. It’s a fairly classic story in which Kipawa, who is the son of Guran’s old friend Babudan, challenges Guran for leadership. He is quite within his rights to do so, since Guran had disinherited his wayward son Timo and altered the tribal Chief selection to a democratic process. A system of election in which the candidates must undergo a series of tests. The outcomes of these tests both physical and mental are keenly observed by the tribe who will ultimately cast their vote having been swayed by a candidates success or failure in the challenge. The Phantom would never interfere in this process no matter his allegiance but it does provide opportunity for the young Kit and Heloise to learn from the wisdom that can only come with life experience. No. 172 contains the first publication of the 1954/55 Sunday story ‘Alexander’s Diamond Cup’ and the first publication of the 1955 Sunday story ‘The Gibs Brothers’. Both feature art by Wilson McCoy. ‘Alexander’s Diamond Cup’ is the first story to name an ancient artifact, the three thousand year old Alexander’s Diamond Cup, which would eventually end up in the ‘Major Treasure Room.’ Though Lee Falk would not invent the ‘Major Treasure Room’ until he wrote the 1962 Sunday story ‘Treasure of the Skull Cave’ complete in issue No. 1,000. Each year on this night (24 October) the Phantom enters the vault and retrieves a cup and by eerie firelight, watched by silent pygmies, he drinks a toast to his valiant forebears. Phantom “To the first Phantom and all who followed – good rest.” This story was published complete in No. 1219. ‘The Gibs Brothers’ is an incredibly short (5 weeks) Sunday story which Lee Falk seems to have had a lot of fun with. For the first time in a Sunday story “There are nights,” the natives say, “when the Phantom comes out of the Deep Woods – and walks in the town like an ordinary man.” This is one of those nights. This is also the first story in which the Phantom does not appear in his costume. Previously in the 1944 daily story ‘The Spy Gang’ complete in No. 1008 and 1498, the Phantom appeared in his costume only at the end of that story. Phantom to bar man “A bowl of water for my dog and a glass of milk for me, please.” Patron “Well, slap my wrist and call me Chauncey!” The first Sunday old jungle saying (so far located) ‘When the Phantom’s voice grows cold, it is enough to freeze the blood’ – old jungle saying. Phantom “Who are these brothers?” Patron “The meanest and toughest guys on the coast…” The Gibs Brothers are the 18th and 19th giants to face the Phantom! Patron “Wow! Who was that guy! He comes in – orders milk like a mama’s boy – then he mops up the floor with the two toughest guys on the coast! – and makes them mop, in the bargain!” This story was published complete in No. 1167. No. 171 features the second publication of the 1953/54 daily story ‘The Super Apes’ with art by Wilson McCoy. The story was first published in No. 89 and 90 back in 1956. In this story the well sign reads ‘Poison water do not use Com J.P.’ Colonel Weeks returns in this story but he is not named and referred to only as ‘The Colonel.’ In the 1952 daily story ‘The Jungle Patrol’ complete in No. 1123, Col. Weeks was named as Colonel James! A new legend spreads through the jungle ‘In Llongo land, the Super-Apes tried to destroy him (the Phantom) in a burning place – but they could not.’ This story was published complete in No. 1219. No. 170 features the second publication of the 1953 daily story ‘The Matchmaker’ with art by Wilson McCoy. The story was first published in No. 88 back in 1955. Introducing Aunt Elsie – sister of Lily and Dave Palmer. For the first time (I have not found an earlier reference yet) – Diana keeps a guest room for the Phantom – with two straw mats on the floor (one for Devil) and the window and door are always kept open. Baron Cole joins a long list of suitors for Diana’s hand in marriage. Diana says to Baron Cole “Aunt Elsie’s got all the money – we’re the poor relatives.” The Baron holds Diana to ransom for a million dollars! As the Cap points his gun at the Phantom – the Phantom’s hand moves like lightning – then the iron fist. The story and art work were both the creation of Lou Manna whose previous work for Moonstone include The Hunt and Valley of the Golden Men. Over its many years of publishing Frew’s forays into the arena of original work have been few and far between. Most notable were the works written by Jim Shepherd with the art of Keith Chatto and our own Glenn Ford. Last year we had Expedition into the Jungle parts 1 & 2 by Ferri and Felmang. Now feast your eyes on Lou Manna’s art for the very first time in at Frew! We believe that this was originally slated for Moonstone but was not taken up which is how it came to our door. Luckily for Lou, it was at a time in Frew’s development under new management when we were hungry to try new approaches and keen to get our hands on original previously unpublished material. The first thing that strikes the reader of this story is the strength of the art work. Yes it is a two part story which I understand some of you find a source of irritation! I am publishing them in very quick succession, so that you will not have to wait weeks for the next part. It will be out in exactly a week’s time. It is in full colour which raises an interesting question. Prior to the publication of the Paul Ryan tribute edition Frew had not produced any colour comics. When that came out it was extremely well received. Many of the readers had been suggesting for years that Frew should consider publishing some colour issues. Now that we have embraced the idea of producing the occasional colour comic and colouring sections of the Annual Special etc I am starting to get feed back that indicates a reluctance to embrace colour.

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"Pirates of the Red Dragon" - story by Norman Worker and art by Georges Bess.

Cover art by Antonio Lemos.

Story: Pirates of the Red Dragon is a 3 part series which was originally published by Semic Press back in 1979. Written by Norman Worker with art courtesy of Georges Bess. Norman J Worker was a British writer who wrote a total of 128 Phantom stories for Team Fantomen, among them The Mystery of the Golden Rune series reprinted recently by Frew in 2015. Georges Bess the artist began to draw the Phantom in 1976 for Fantomen and continued to do so up until 1987. Several of the stories drawn by him were written by Layla Gauraz who ultimately became his wife. Devil’s Story, may well be one of his best known Phantom classics which was also produced in 1979. Pirates of the Red Dragon is a rollicking adventure which in its time was doubtless inspired by the James Bond movie genre of the day. Central to the story is Princess Sin. As the name suggests, Princess Sin is a voluptuous, grand arch-vixen who secretly longs for the love of a clever, strong man. It presents as a continuation along the theme of Princess Sin’s obsession with the Phantom in which the Phantom and Diana both find themselves in trouble whilst in Cairo. There is no shortage of action and danger in this story which reads like a film script set against the dramatic and evocative Egyptian backdrop. Princess Sin is a sharply defined villain of epic proportion, jaw dropping beauty and an ice cold calculating murderess to boot! She is light years removed from the nice girl next door! The amazing cover for this issue was drawn for us by local artist Jamie Johnson and once again he has delivered a piece of art that stunningly encapsulates and invokes the sense of drama depicted on the pages within! Jamie has been commissioned to create a triptych series of covers for us later in the year which I am sure will be no less amazing than the storyline itself. A triptych for those of you who may be unfamiliar is a series of three images that join together to create one. All three segments of this story seem to stand firmly on their own, but are united by Princess Sin’s obsession with our hero. This jungle adventure also features Dr Axel who first appeared in ‘Dr Axel and the Witchmen’ back in 1955. This story is the first to feature the good mark sign above the gates of Dr Axel’s jungle hospital. There are three versions of the good mark sign delivered by The Phantom’s ring and two other versions that are symbols. This story features the very first good mark ring design described as an ‘X’ with two sword hilts facing right and two facing left. In the second ‘X’ ring design the sword hilts all face to the right. Note that Lee Falk describes the good mark design as being ‘crossed swords for protection’ in the 1976 Sunday story ‘The Stolen Ring’ which was published last in No. 1343. Lee Falk notes early in the story that the jungle is filled with Phantom legends such as ‘The Phantom once killed four tigers at the same time, barehanded’ and then proceeds to tell us the legend of ‘The Flying Horse.’ Challenged by the Witchmen The Phantom faces off against the stone idol, Oogooru!. God of Death – Witchcraft and Murder, on Doom Peak. A spectacular scene as The Phantom on Hero, with Devil, leap from the great height of Doom Peak plunging into the lake below! Using a black helicopter, provided by Colonel Weeks, at night with a searchlight, The Phantom appears to be flying atop Hero, and crashes the stone idol of Oogooru amid the witchmen attacking Dr Axel’s hospital! This story also features the old jungle saying ‘The Phantom has eyes and ears everywhere,’ and confirms ‘The Phantom cannot refuse a challenge!’ Lastly the well sign at Jungle Patrol Headquarters reads ‘Poison water do not use Com J.P.’ This story was published complete by Jim Shepherd in No. 1216.

No. 168 features the second publication of the 1954 daily story ‘The Wrestling Tourney’ with art by Wilson McCoy. The story was first published in No. 85 back in 1955. Every year at this time each village enters a contestant in the wrestling tourney. The winner fights The Phantom and will rule the jungle for a year. The 1st Phantom entered the tourney and won and so The Phantom became Ruler of the Jungle! Ookon is the winner of the tribes and is the 17th giant to face The Phantom. Ookon and Conky devise a plan to beat The Phantom by putting sleeping powder in his toasting cup. Ookon defeats The Phantom! and becomes Ruler of the Jungle. Diana discovers the truth and The Phantom again faces Ookon in a rematch and this time The Phantom wins! Note in this story Ookon is of the Onaway tribe which is also spelt Onewey! Another saying, but not an old jungle saying, regarding the tourney is remembered ‘The Bandar know only one ruler in victory or defeat – The Phantom.’ This story was published complete in No. 1219 and more recently in No. 1653. Note: Lee Falk returned to this ‘Ruler of the Jungle Tourney’ theme in the 1956 Sunday story ‘The Jungle Tourneys.’ This 1956 story was one of the lost Phantom adventures never published by Frew before No. 1000 in 1992.

No. 167 features the second publication of the 1954 daily story ‘Ragon’s Game’ with art by Wilson McCoy. The story was first published in No. 83/84 back in 1955. Prince Ragon is the bored master of the Silver Palace and bears a striking resemblance to ‘The Old Man of the Mountains’ who appeared in the 1942/43 Sunday story ‘Castle in the Clouds.’ Ragon devises a plan to offer certain people a challenge to obtain their greatest wish which he places on his balcony. From his balcony Ragon watches, to alleviate his boredom, as each person tries to overcome his challenges. The Phantom spoils his fun and Ragon sets his sights on getting The Phantom to play his game. Ragon kidnaps Diana and places her on his balcony and The Phantom must now play his game. Challenges for The Phantom are: 1. A tiger. 2. Crocodiles. 3. Quicksand. 4. Giant hawks. 5. A mounted armored knight. 6. A wall of fire. 7. Finally an avalanche. The Phantom wins the game and takes Ragon to court charged with kidnapping Diana. Diana “It’s all over! It was written with the seasoned pen of Tony DePaul and drawn by Paul Ryan. Sadly, Paul passed away before completion and Mike Manley stepped in to finish it off. If you notice a shift in style at the end that is the reason. The daily started on February 1st 2016 with a total of 108 strips it ran for 18 week until June 4th 2016. The main villain in this story Dumat at first appearance seems to be a Royalist who is unhappy with Prince Rex’s loving liaison with Captain Lara, but there is more to this than meets the eye as the Phantom is soon to find out. It is a story in which many people have jumped to the wrong conclusions. The Phantom finds himself having to re-educate the different factions so that they develop a broader understanding of the political consequences of their misguided and ill informed actions. There is a link made between this story and a previous Sunday story The Battlements of the Nomad in so far as Dumat’s finance and support is concerned. Enough said, I have learned over time that I must at all times restrain myself from revealing too much, or else I spoil the fun of your discovery! The story at the back, SOS Phantom The Pirate Raiders is a story that would have been previously published by King Comics in 1966 written and drawn by Bill Lignante. The covers on this issue were done by Queenland artist Shane Foley. Some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting Shane at Supanova and the LFMBEC dinner last month. Beautifully illustrated, it’s a cracker of a story that traces the struggles and dangers faced by a young man whose only apparent gift is the ability to fight extremely well. He is fresh off the boat from Ireland and soon finds himself being manipulated by those keen to take advantage of his skill set. This is a journey that commenced with Lee Falk’s story, The Female Phantom which originally ran as a newspaper strip from July 20th 1952 until October 12th 1952. The wonderful art of Wilson McCoy has been masterfully coloured by Norway’s renowned Phantom authority, Ivan Pederson. He has used a beautiful and tastefully authentic palette to allow this fine Lee Falk/McCoy classic to spring into a new lease on life. Since this original 1952 story, Julie Walker and her twin brother Kit have been referred to as the children of th 17th Phantom and on another occasion as the children of the 16th Phantom. This only adds to the mystique and promise of this character who has all the training and the skills to be the Phantom in her own right but is invariably brought back to domesticity, by love and worldly feminine stereotyping that was prevalent in the era of her creation. The Female Phantom lit a fire that has been burning and smouldering throughout Phantom folklore ever since. Julie Walker is a much loved and deeply cherished character who has generated her own story within the Phantom across many different publications such as Fantomen, Moonstone, Gold Key, King, Charlton and many reprints by Frew. The immortal line from The Female Phantom when the Phantom sets out to matchmake and resolve Julie’s romantic life, “My sister is in love with you. What are you going to do about that?”, uttered shortly after she saved him and then the missionary. This was the 1950’s after all and the fact that a woman might be depicted as strong and capable in a heroic mold was new and uncharted territory. Of course as the story goes she married, produced 4 children living happily ever after! In the hands of Team Fantomen, her husband died, she studied with Louis Pasteur became a doctor helping the jungle tribes and spent her remaining days at the Skull Cave. Moonstone took a completely new tack with her. She was married to Bradley and lived in America. They had twin daughters together and spent time in London during the period when Jack the Ripper was wreaking havoc. In the Gold Key/King/Charlton series Julie popped up to fill in for her brother complete with pet leopard Fury and horse named Flash. I would like to thank publisher Dan Herman of Hermes Press who very generously shared his archives, allowing Frew to bring you some of these stories in colour for the first time. Once again thanks to Andreas Erikkson who helped us with the Swedish art work. Joan Boix, who was also one of the creators of the original Fantomen cover seen here as an inset was generous enough to provide us with a new cover for our Australian publication of this story. The writer Olof Siverbo doesn’t have a great deal of history as a Phantom author, The Butcher from Clarksville (Frew No 1691) being the only other on record. Giovanni Fiorentini is the writer and the art was produced by Senio Pratesi. The sumptuous cover inset left, with our hero clad in Ferrari red, swinging from a vine whilst bowling over bad guy was the work of artist Mario Caria. This story might have been a perfect candidate for one of our Phantom’s World comics except that it has already been published in English several times, by King Comics back in Issue #25 1967, Alan Class & Co in Creepy Worlds#89 and in 2012 was included in the hardcover book The King Years by Hermes Press. The cover art inset below for the King Comics version of this story was produced from a panel done by renowned Phantom artist Sy Barry. King Comics came about because King Features Syndicate decided to publish their own licensed characters. They did this from August 1966 through to December 1967. So how and why did Frew come to slot this story into the 2017 schedule? One dark and restless night whilst trolling for gems on eBay my colleague Glenn Ford actually came upon the original black and white art for The Cold Fire Worshippers. It didn’t take too much arm twisting to convince the partner Rene of its significant worthiness. The deal was done and the art is now part of the collection. It’s a rare and quirky little story quite typical of that Italian period. The gorgeous original front cover by Glenn Lumsden supported by Jason Paulos on the back, elevates this comic to the level of instantly collectible. Since The Cold Fire Worshippers is only short it allows us the opportunity to bring you yet another episode of our newly minted Australian creation Phantom by Gaslight Episode #2. In which Julie Walker gets face to fist with Jack the Ripper himself no-less, and Kit is off having a gas with another famous archetypal villain! This story may spark some debate here in Australia as it did in Sweden! I do hope so, and I look forward to receiving your views and opinions on what at first glance appears to be the setup for transition to retirement series for our beloved 21st Phantom, or not, you be the judge! It is set in the near future, which will be useful for us all because as this storyline takes off in its own time zone, we can continue to bring you stories from the past and present that still feature the main man himself! There has been speculation for many years now regarding the likely succession of Kit and or Heloise when the time came for our 21st Phantom to take life a little easier in his dotage or heaven forbid fall foul of some evil doer! This multi part story set in the future would seem to be about to explore all those questions while leaving the door ajar for a 21st Phantom return. I think it’s what one might refer to as hedging the bet with a soft retirement. This is understandable since the loyal readership have only ever known the current Phantom, the 21st in the line since inception, well almost! Since there have been other stories that referred to the present Phantom as the 20th (e.g The Adventures of Lucy Cary). This confusing contradiction was finally ended in the mid-70’s by Lee Falk who declared the current Phantom to be the 21st at which time the Scandinavian publications followed. The notable exception being Bastei Verlag publications in Germany where the 15th Phantom is considered the current. But let’s not transgress with comic history technicalities this is serious stuff that has global implications for many thousands of Phantom Phans.
I can only talk in generalisations at this stage since you haven’t yet read the plot within, and believe it or not contrary to some people’s belief, I do attempt to refrain from giving too much away these days. However there is so much to consider about this particular storyline and its potential ramifications if indeed a succession is the long term intention. The personalities of the twins are for the first time open to scrutiny in more detail than ever before. The question of should it be Kit, or should it be Heloise to become the 22nd Phantom is bound to be asked at some point. Of the two, who is best equipped and would do a better job? Is this another bastion of masculinity that could be challenged by changing perceptions in societal norm? I’m anticipating a “Phantom isn’t for Sheilas” backlash from the Aussie man caves, so don’t disappoint, get those letters in! There are more questions than answers at this point.
