I suggest reading 174 (part 1) before reading 175 (part 2)! No. 174 and No. 175 contain the second publication of part 1 and part 2 of the 1943/44 daily story ‘The Governor and Suzie’ with art by Wilson McCoy. This story was previously published in three issues No. 79, 80 and 81 back in 1955. This story follows on from ‘The Phantom’s Engagement’, complete in issue No. 1154 and 1340, when Diana told the Phantom she was going to marry Byron. At the end of ‘The Phantom’s Engagement’ there is a caption leading into the next story, ‘Next Week: High Seas Highjacker’. Whether this is meant to be the story title for ‘The Governor and Suzie’ or just a lead in telling readers what was coming up is open to debate as Lee Falk did not title the actual story. The Phantom boards the S.S.Harvey. This is the fifth time the Phantom stays in cabin 14! On deck Suzie desperately tries to meet the mysterious ‘Mr Walker.’ Reminiscent of Trudy in ‘The Shark’s Nest.’ Suzie and the General talk about the Phantom,“…it was a native legend of a man who had lived for centuries – who was rough on all lawbreakers – but especially rough with pirates – a man, they said, ‘with the strength of ten tigers’...” A few panels further the caption reads ‘The Phantom moves behind them, as silently as a cat.’ Lee Falk had not yet invented old jungle sayings but you can see where they came from. Suzie offers to help the Phantom escape. Phantom: “Suzie, I’m in a tight spot – I’ve been in tight spots before – I’ve gotten out of them – But I’ve never lied my way out of them…” The Phantom had a similar offer of help from Sala in ‘The Singh Brotherhood’ just before he was led to the vat of boiling oil! (see pages 150 and 151 of No. 1128). The General to Suzie: “Remember, the only one who can help any of my employees to quit is the undertaker.” One of the most dramatic scenes in a Phantom story as the Governor shoots to kill the Phantom, Suzie runs between them and is shot. With Suzie gasping for life on the floor, the Phantom is filled with fury – he swings hard – and the Governor cheats the hangman after all. The saddest sequence Lee Falk ever wrote for a Phantom story, even more compelling than the fate of ‘Queen Asta of Trondelay.’ Commencing on 19 February 1944 Suzie’s request , once read, never forgotten, as she lies dying in a hospital bed. “You’re the first man I’ve ever really loved...yet I’ve never seen your face...will you...let me see...what you really...look like?” And the Phantom unmasks for Suzie on 22 February 1944! Suzie: “You look... As I imagined... You’d look.” This story was published complete by Jim Shepherd in Frew No. 1184 which has one of the finest covers you will ever see. The story was more recently published in issue No. 1623. No. 173 contains the very first publication of the new 1960 daily story ‘The Reporter’ with art by Wilson McCoy. Jungle Patrol territory stretches from the coast for a hundred miles into the jungle – and a thousand miles long, crossing six countries. ‘World’ magazine sends Maggy and Blake to do a story on the Jungle Patrol. Col. Weeks: “We get a thousand applications a week, out of them one or two may make it…” Col. Weeks: “This room is top secret. You broke in here. It is permitted in my orders to put you both against that wall and execute you by this firing squad. Now!” The well sign reads, ‘Well water condemned stay out Commander J.P.’ but at the end of the story the sign has changed to ‘Stay out well water condemned Commander J.P.’ Blake is the second person (after the master spy Heg) to discover the secret of the well and the identity of the Unknown Commander of the Jungle Patrol. The Nomad is an old enemy of the Phantom. The Nomad
again appears to be up to no good in the middle of a desert but the
Phantom is keeping a close eye on him.
Our second story is a daily, The Twins’ Futures in which the children are
growing up and consideration must be given to their future education in
preparation for the life ahead whatever it may throw at them! So on the
occasion of their 15th birthdays the decisions need to be made. This is
an interesting story for two reasons. One, it is an another opportunity to
appreciate and savour the work of Paul Ryan. Secondly, as it may very
well signpost a new direction for the Phantom. Up until now it has been
unclear what was going to occur with the children. If indeed they would
grow and when they do who would fulfill the destiny that belongs to a
modern Phantom?
Father to Son would on face value be the logical succession but this is a
new era and Heloise has all the skill and intellect of her sibling. We live in
an era where we like to think woman have earned equal rights! I wonder if
that will flow on into a Phantom’s future?
Is this is just a window into the domestic humdrum of parenting decisions.
I see more in it than that! I strongly feel that it may signal a turning point
for the twins and their roles within the Phantom universe.
In the following story Farewell to the Deep Woods, the twins embark on
their new chapter. This is a journey that commenced with Lee Falk’s story, The Female Phantom which originally ran as a newspaper strip from July 20th 1952 until October 12th 1952. The wonderful art of Wilson McCoy has been masterfully coloured by Norway’s renowned Phantom authority, Ivan Pederson. He has used a beautiful and tastefully authentic palette to allow this fine Lee Falk/McCoy classic to spring into a new lease on life. Since this original 1952 story, Julie Walker and her twin brother Kit have been referred to as the children of th 17th Phantom and on another occasion as the children of the 16th Phantom. This only adds to the mystique and promise of this character who has all the training and the skills to be the Phantom in her own right but is invariably brought back to domesticity, by love and worldly feminine stereotyping that was prevalent in the era of her creation. The Female Phantom lit a fire that has been burning and smouldering throughout Phantom folklore ever since. Julie Walker is a much loved and deeply cherished character who has generated her own story within the Phantom across many different publications such as Fantomen, Moonstone, Gold Key, King, Charlton and many reprints by Frew. The immortal line from The Female Phantom when the Phantom sets out to matchmake and resolve Julie’s romantic life, “My sister is in love with you. What are you going to do about that?”, uttered shortly after she saved him and then the missionary. This was the 1950’s after all and the fact that a woman might be depicted as strong and capable in a heroic mold was new and uncharted territory. Of course as the story goes she married, produced 4 children living happily ever after! In the hands of Team Fantomen, her husband died, she studied with Louis Pasteur became a doctor helping the jungle tribes and spent her remaining days at the Skull Cave. Moonstone took a completely new tack with her. She was married to Bradley and lived in America. They had twin daughters together and spent time in London during the period when Jack the Ripper was wreaking havoc. In the Gold Key/King/Charlton series Julie popped up to fill in for her brother complete with pet leopard Fury and horse named Flash. I would like to thank publisher Dan Herman of Hermes Press who very generously shared his archives, allowing Frew to bring you some of these stories in colour for the first time. I should warn that there are images of the female form on various pages depicted in scanty attire and shock horror, dare I say, outright nudity! So hang on to your pacemakers as you take on The Wedding Gifts uncut!. My personal view is that it is all quite sweet and innocent really but I feel sure there may be some of you that view it differently. I suspect that it may have been this very question that has caused the delay in publication here in Australia. At it’s heart this story from the pen of Donne Avenell is essentially a fable in its structure. Now feast your eyes on Lou Manna’s art for the very first time in at Frew! We believe that this was originally slated for Moonstone but was not taken up which is how it came to our door. I am publishing them in very quick succession, so that you will not have to wait weeks for the next part. It will be out in exactly a week’s time. It is in full colour which raises an interesting question. Prior to the publication of the Paul Ryan tribute edition Frew had not produced any colour comics. When that came out it was extremely well received. Many of the readers had been suggesting for years that Frew should consider publishing some colour issues. Please jump on your computers and let me know if you have an opinion one way or the other. Perhaps I should have asked Glenn to draw in some big girl pants or bikinis but I didn’t want to take away from the naive frolicking artistry in its original form. Who are we to be placing black censorship boxes all over a piece of Phantom history drawn by the likes of Felmang and Ferri? I suspect that it may have been this very question that has caused the delay in publication here in Australia. At it’s heart this story from the pen of Donne Avenell is essentially a fable in its structure. A fable being a short tale to impart a moral lesson, often with animals or inanimate objects as characters. This story displays similar characteristics to LLongo’s Amulet by the same author which we published last year.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0378/0521/products/1775-Front-cover-Signature_7129d697-74e2-40d7-9042-516f1730755b.jpg?v=1489705359
issue-1778-fortnightly-2017
Issue 1778 - Fortnightly, 2017

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"The Challenge" - story by Tony dePaul and art by Paul Ryan.

Cover art by Jeremy Macpherson.

Story: The Challenge, is a daily story that appeared in newspapers starting 11 May, 2015 and ran until 12 September. This one was written by Tony DePaul with art by Paul Ryan. It’s a fairly classic story in which Kipawa, who is the son of Guran’s old friend Babudan, challenges Guran for leadership. He is quite within his rights to do so, since Guran had disinherited his wayward son Timo and altered the tribal Chief selection to a democratic process. A system of election in which the candidates must undergo a series of tests. The outcomes of these tests both physical and mental are keenly observed by the tribe who will ultimately cast their vote having been swayed by a candidates success or failure in the challenge. The Phantom would never interfere in this process no matter his allegiance but it does provide opportunity for the young Kit and Heloise to learn from the wisdom that can only come with life experience. No. 172 contains the first publication of the 1954/55 Sunday story ‘Alexander’s Diamond Cup’ and the first publication of the 1955 Sunday story ‘The Gibs Brothers’. Both feature art by Wilson McCoy. ‘Alexander’s Diamond Cup’ is the first story to name an ancient artifact, the three thousand year old Alexander’s Diamond Cup, which would eventually end up in the ‘Major Treasure Room.’ Though Lee Falk would not invent the ‘Major Treasure Room’ until he wrote the 1962 Sunday story ‘Treasure of the Skull Cave’ complete in issue No. 1,000. Each year on this night (24 October) the Phantom enters the vault and retrieves a cup and by eerie firelight, watched by silent pygmies, he drinks a toast to his valiant forebears. Phantom “To the first Phantom and all who followed – good rest.” This story was published complete in No. 1219. ‘The Gibs Brothers’ is an incredibly short (5 weeks) Sunday story which Lee Falk seems to have had a lot of fun with. For the first time in a Sunday story “There are nights,” the natives say, “when the Phantom comes out of the Deep Woods – and walks in the town like an ordinary man.” This is one of those nights. This is also the first story in which the Phantom does not appear in his costume. Previously in the 1944 daily story ‘The Spy Gang’ complete in No. 1008 and 1498, the Phantom appeared in his costume only at the end of that story. Phantom to bar man “A bowl of water for my dog and a glass of milk for me, please.” Patron “Well, slap my wrist and call me Chauncey!” The first Sunday old jungle saying (so far located) ‘When the Phantom’s voice grows cold, it is enough to freeze the blood’ – old jungle saying. Phantom “Who are these brothers?” Patron “The meanest and toughest guys on the coast…” The Gibs Brothers are the 18th and 19th giants to face the Phantom! Patron “Wow! Who was that guy! He comes in – orders milk like a mama’s boy – then he mops up the floor with the two toughest guys on the coast! – and makes them mop, in the bargain!” This story was published complete in No. 1167. No. 171 features the second publication of the 1953/54 daily story ‘The Super Apes’ with art by Wilson McCoy. The story was first published in No. 89 and 90 back in 1956. In this story the well sign reads ‘Poison water do not use Com J.P.’ Colonel Weeks returns in this story but he is not named and referred to only as ‘The Colonel.’ In the 1952 daily story ‘The Jungle Patrol’ complete in No. 1123, Col. Weeks was named as Colonel James! A new legend spreads through the jungle ‘In Llongo land, the Super-Apes tried to destroy him (the Phantom) in a burning place – but they could not.’ This story was published complete in No. 1219. No. 170 features the second publication of the 1953 daily story ‘The Matchmaker’ with art by Wilson McCoy. The story was first published in No. 88 back in 1955. Introducing Aunt Elsie – sister of Lily and Dave Palmer. For the first time (I have not found an earlier reference yet) – Diana keeps a guest room for the Phantom – with two straw mats on the floor (one for Devil) and the window and door are always kept open. Baron Cole joins a long list of suitors for Diana’s hand in marriage. Diana says to Baron Cole “Aunt Elsie’s got all the money – we’re the poor relatives.” The Baron holds Diana to ransom for a million dollars! As the Cap points his gun at the Phantom – the Phantom’s hand moves like lightning – then the iron fist. The story and art work were both the creation of Lou Manna whose previous work for Moonstone include The Hunt and Valley of the Golden Men. Over its many years of publishing Frew’s forays into the arena of original work have been few and far between. Most notable were the works written by Jim Shepherd with the art of Keith Chatto and our own Glenn Ford. Last year we had Expedition into the Jungle parts 1 & 2 by Ferri and Felmang. Now feast your eyes on Lou Manna’s art for the very first time in at Frew! We believe that this was originally slated for Moonstone but was not taken up which is how it came to our door. Luckily for Lou, it was at a time in Frew’s development under new management when we were hungry to try new approaches and keen to get our hands on original previously unpublished material. The first thing that strikes the reader of this story is the strength of the art work. Yes it is a two part story which I understand some of you find a source of irritation! Now that we have embraced the idea of producing the occasional colour comic and colouring sections of the Annual Special etc I am starting to get feed back that indicates a reluctance to embrace colour.

36 pages.

Mint condition.

"Pirates of the Red Dragon" - story by Norman Worker and art by Georges Bess.

Cover art by Antonio Lemos.

Pirates of the Red Dragon is a 3 part series which was originally published by Semic Press back in 1979. We do hope you enjoy this generational journey. The strength and dynamic nature of the art speaks for itself. From front cover to back Lou Manna delivers with a style and personality that is uniquely his own. Last time we saw our Ghost Who Walks, he was free falling without a parachute from the wing of an aeroplane. How was that for a cliffhanger? Feast your eyes on the gorgeous double page spread of Hero at full stretch, clearly revelling in a little light gallop through the jungle midst pouring rain, as he carries the Phantom on an urgent rescue mission. The story tells a tale of two very different paternal lineages. Fathers and sons pitted against one another over two generations. We get to see the mechanics of good and evil play out against one another set against a backdrop of variant family values. Sons often seek to follow their father and to gain that warm glow of approval for the effort. In some instances it is on the darker side of human existence and others, like the Phantom are well and truly in the light! Lou Manna does well to find and explore these deeper themes in this otherwise rollicking action packed Phantom adventure.

We now offer this as a physical paper comic or as a digital comic.
Please be aware that if choosing a Digital Comics from the dropdown menu below they are for private usage only! All three segments of this story seem to stand firmly on their own, but are united by Princess Sin’s obsession with our hero. The Phantom is put to the test in almost every imaginable way by the beautiful and beguiling Princess. She certainly isn’t the shy and retiring type when it comes to her feelings for him. Ultimately, I felt he was quite shaken by the whole experience. For those who came in late, and if you are just picking this up from the newsagent and would like to read the earlier two comics they are available on our website. We were fortunate enough to be able to engage Chris Wahl to provide the cover for this issue. Chris is a local commercial artist with an impressive global portfolio of work behind him. Joan Boix, who was also one of the creators of the original Fantomen cover seen here as an inset was generous enough to provide us with a new cover for our Australian publication of this story. The writer Olof Siverbo doesn’t have a great deal of history as a Phantom author, The Butcher from Clarksville (Frew No 1691) being the only other on record. There is a distinct edge of darkness to this story. I found myself feeling a little uneasy and wondering just how far are they planning to go with this? Written by Norman Worker with art by Georges Bess. This is the final and last episode, in the series and what a thrilling ride this particular trilogy of stories has been. This is his first Phantom cover for Frew and it certainly has the wow factor!
