Reimerthi's script is not only clever, but fast moving and Lindahl has captured the essence of the story with his innovative use of panel designs, duo-tone and offbeat angles which stress the sea action and the weird landscape of Bird of Prey Island. Aspiring comics and commercial artists should study his techniques, because some of his stormy ocean scenes and perspective shots on Bird of Prey Island are absolutely brilliant. It first appeared as a Sunday story in 1952 and at the time was a very brave step by Lee! At that time, The Phantom was well established internationally as the ultimate man….an athlete and fighting machine who did indeed seem immortal and totally without fear. For Lee to bring in a twin sister who was his equal in so many ways, but especially in the use of firearms—as the story stresses—and almost as physically strong, may have appealed to women of the time who were pushing the equal opportunity barrow, but may have upset dedicated male Phantom fans! It’s interesting in hindsight to reflect that Lee never included twin sister Julie in another story!

The Belt appeared as a Sunday adventure in 1954 and remains one of Lee’s best-loved stories, It is one of the very few Lee Falk stories which vividly depicts the death of a Phantom and possibly for that reason alone, has attained special popularity with dedicated fans. It is worthwhile carefully comparing McCoy's art in The Belt with the earlier The Female Phantom. It is known that Dorothy, his wife, helped him with layouts and also lettered both strip for a number of years, but if he had other artists helping him with pencilling and inking, their identities have been lost.

The new daily and Sunday adventures are poles apart in subject matter! The daily story about the young girl and her addiction to spraying graffiti depictions of The Phantom, is partly a social commentary and partly an example of modern psychology. Lee Falk builds the story around the legend of the first Phantom challenging the winner of an inter-tribe wrestling competition with the victor ruling the jungle for the following 12 months, It’s worth pointing out here that before the emergence of The Phantom, the wrestling competition was already an institution in the jungle with the final event battled to the death. The first Phantom brought an end to this barbaric practice! Naturally enough, The Phantom, with his strength and athletic ability, never loses and the legend gathers more power each year.

Until this year, when the 21st Phantom is tricked and doped into unexpected defeat. Lee, as you will discover, staked a lot on his skills as a story-teller to get The Phantom out of a hole. Another loss in the re-match—and the saga of The Phantom could have well ended with this cleverly scripted adventure! Look for something unusual within the Skull Cave! The tombs of all The Phantom’s forefathers are marked not with dates—but the famous skull mark! If you are new to The Phantom fold, the name Crocco may not mean much. Let me explain that ‘Croccos’ are best described as creatures and while no definitive explanation for their existence has ever been offered, it seems they are humans who returned to the sea and developed fish-like characteristics. The Crocco creatures were not inventions of Lee Falk. That honour, interestingly, falls to Tony DePaul who wrote a Phantom adventure for a Fantomen comic book originally published in Scandinavia in 1997 called The Mystery of Crocco Island. This was a Sunday newspaper strip and it is our first publication of the story in its entirety. I found it particularly rewarding to have Kit and Heloise on an adventure with their father as they set out to Iceland to set straight a previously unresolved injustice. This was a daily newspaper strip that ran for much longer than most from 25.08.2014- 09.05.2015. It comes together very well as a completed story. The Phantom is grievously injured early on and we find ourselves taken on the ride as he teeters close to death and then struggles with rehabilitation and the loss of identity caused by amnesia. Devil the faithful mountain wolf as ever is by his side and the family never give up.

His true heroic nature is not diminished or suppressed by memory loss! Even time spent with the jungle patrol can’t seem to jog that past free in his mind. He’s physically remarkable, a natural leader of men and is swooned over by the woman he encounters, all the while completely unaware that he has a life and home to return to. Will he fully recover and ever be The Phantom again? What will it take to jolt him back to full recovery? Felmang’s depiction of
the character Slick was clearly modelled on a young Lee Falk. This story was published
previously by Frew back in 2000 Issue No 1252.

The Lady Luck was published in two parts in 1283 and 1284 both of which are contained
within for your reading pleasure. This is a a re-creation of an even earlier daily story
by Falk and McCoy published in 1948. Ulf Granberg has slighty altered the original
script and of course Felmang has given the art the treatment that we have come to
expect from him. He presents the reader with intricate and detailed backgrounds and
his women are almost universally gorgeous without physical flaw. Once again Felmang
has chosen to model one of the characters on a famous actress (and cabaret performer)
Marlene Dietrich.

This gang of girl pirates is the 5th all girl gang of criminals that Lee Falk has created and interestingly they appear to be the last. Prior to this story female gangs appeared in The Sky Band 1936-37, The Golden Circle 1939-40, The Return of Sky Band 1941-42, The Mermaid’s of Melo Straits 1945-46 and then The Lady Luck from 1948. We hope that you will enjoy revisiting these classic Lee Falk re-creations. Team Fantomen did quite a few of these and they showcase Felmang’s art at what I believe may have been the zenith of his creativity. That is not to say that his extraordinary feel for the Phantom story has diminished.
