Blood Night written by Michael Tierres (aka Claes Remerthi) with art by Jaime Vallve. The story centres around a tale from the chronicles and the 2nd Phantom is in Paris helping his half brother Rene de Montmorency in a struggle that was part of the religious persecution of the Huguenots. This gem is another of the previously unpublished stories from Egmont and was brought to my attention by a well researched Phan. Thank you David of Brisbane for the suggestion!

Once again we see the intriguing blend of history and Phantom fiction. This story was set in and around what became known as the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 24 August –03 October 1572. The Catholics killed thousands of Huguenots (Protestants) in Paris. Similar massacres took place in other French towns in the weeks that followed. The exact number of fatalities throughout the country is not known but by 17th September almost 25,000 Protestants had been massacred in Paris alone. Outside of Paris the killing continued until 03 October. An amnesty granted in 1573 pardoned the perpetrators. Reading between the lines that looks a lot like a State sanctioned attempt at genocide to me. Little wonder the bad blood continued for generations to come!
