Loads of entertainment in this issue!
Heading the list of four adventures is the new story, The Mexican Phantom by Tony DePaul with art by Paul Ryan.
Backing this really unusual thriller (about which, more later) are three great stories from Lee Falk’s palmy days….The Wisdom of Solomon, The Marshall Sisters and The Isle of Death.
The Solomon saga originally appeared as a daily with art by Wilson McCoy, back in 1956 and is historically interesting because it marked the second—and last—time Lee used The Phantom’s amazing prop, The Great Skull!
Lee dropped the idea after this story because he felt he was overdue to inject some political correctness into his Phantom stories. It was high time, he reasoned, to move away from awe-struck jungle tribes bowing down to the mysterious ’powers’ of The Phantom!
The 1947-48 Sunday story, The Marshall Sisters is just as historically interesting, because it marked the final appearance of the beautiful, but troublesome Marshall Sisters, Greta and Lana.
Lee introduced them in 1942-43 in the story, Castle in the Clouds and features them in three more Sunday adventures before deciding they were beginning to upstage both The Phantom and Diana ...
